JCA’s Samuel Gorlitz Kensington Clubs Address the Needs of People With Dementia

As our population ages, more families find themselves navigating the complex journey of supporting loved ones with early-stage dementia. This condition affects millions, presenting challenges for people living with dementia, their caregivers, and communities. However, with the right resources and supportive programs, people with early-stage dementia can continue to lead fulfilling and engaging lives.

The need for effective dementia care is becoming more urgent as researchers predict that the number of new dementia cases in the United States will double to one million annually by 2060. This surge is largely attributed to the aging population, as many Americans are living longer than previous generations. By 2060, it is estimated that there will be about 12 million Americans living with dementia. Black Americans, in particular, are expected to see a disproportionate increase in new cases, with annual diagnoses tripling during this period.

At the Jewish Council for the Aging (JCA) of Greater Washington, we know that with the right kind of support, this diagnosis doesn’t have to be the end of joy, growth, and connection.  JCA’s Samuel Gorlitz Kensington Clubs, is designed to meet the needs of people with early-stage dementia and their care partners. This innovative social day model program provides a safe, stimulating, and supportive environment where members can connect, engage, and rediscover joy in everyday activities, while their care partners can get resources, support, and much needed respite.

The Kensington Clubs offer a variety of activities tailored to enhance cognitive stimulation and foster social interaction. Members participate in art, music, exercise, and discussion groups, all guided by trained staff who understand the unique needs of individuals with dementia. These activities provide mental and emotional benefits and a safe environment for participants to build meaningful relationships with others who share similar experiences.

Kensington Clubs are a vital source of support for caregivers, offering them much-needed respite, the reassurance that their loved ones are in capable, compassionate hands, and information about what is available to them. Caregivers often describe the program as a lifeline, giving them time to recharge while knowing their family member is engaged in enriching and enjoyable activities.

The study published in Nature Medicine reinforces the urgent need for programs like Kensington Clubs. It found that adults over 55 have a 42 percent lifetime risk of developing dementia, a risk that grows significantly after age 75. Addressing risk factors such as cardiovascular health, diabetes, and hearing loss could significantly reduce this risk. Experts emphasize the importance of public health and lifestyle interventions over relying solely on emerging pharmaceutical treatments.

The success of programs like Kensington Clubs highlights the profound impact thoughtful community services can have on people affected by dementia. At JCA, we are proud to be part of the solution, empowering older adults and their caregivers with the tools and support they need to navigate this journey with dignity and hope.
